Description

1868-S $5 AU 58 ANACS. The majority of extant 1868-S half eagles grade either VF or XF, and AU examples are just as difficult to locate as those of the S-mint issues from 1858-1867. In Mint State, NGC and PCGS combined report only two examples, both in MS 61 (the same coin crossed over?). One of the finest known survivors of this low mintage (52,000 pieces), heavily circulated issue, both sides show rich sunset-red patina that is somewhat mottled over the obverse. The strike is uncommonly bold and there are no discernible abrasions. A magnificent coin from an aesthetic viewpoint, this specimen also possesses unquestionable rarity that deserves a carefully considered bid.
