Description

1869 Half Eagle, AU55
Underrated in All Grades

1869 $5 AU55 NGC. The 1869 half eagle comes from a small mintage of 1,760 pieces, of which only 50 or 60 examples are believed to survive in all grades. This underrated issue is extremely rare any finer than the present coin. The strike displays bold rendering, and each side has medium yellow-gold color with scattered abrasions. The upper loop of a misplaced numeral appears in the dentils beneath the 86 of the date. Two small, faint, linear lumps in the field beneath the 8 could also be from a dropped date punch.(Registry values: P3)
