Description
1869-S Half Eagle, Conditionally Scarce AU53
1869-S $5 AU53 NGC. The 1869-S five dollar circulated extensively in the channels of commerce, consequently most surviving examples are well worn. The issue becomes scarce in About Uncirculated and is extremely rare in mint condition, where NGC and PCGS have graded a paltry three pieces, none finer than MS62. The wheat-gold surfaces of this AU53 example display traces of luster in the recessed areas, and the design elements are well-impressed except for minor softness on the hair bun, eagle's neck, upper shield, and arrow feathers. Faint pinscratches in the form of a small "x" in the right revere field will help to identify the coin. Census: 8 in 53, 24 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W8, PCGS# 8318, Greysheet# 9048)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
