Description
1869-S Five Dollar, AU58
Rare and Underappreciated
1869-S $5 AU58 PCGS Secure. Like many San Francisco issues
in this series, the 1869-S half eagle is underrated and rare in
high grade. Attractive AU coins are seldom seen, and only five Mint
State pieces are reported by PCGS and NGC combined (2/18). This
coin shows slight high-point friction but retains luster in the
fields with original wheat-gold color. Minor strike weakness is
visible on the hair curls around Liberty's face and on the reverse
fletchings. A curved mark in the left obverse field near star 3 and
4 is the only mentionable abrasion. Population: 3 in 58, 2 finer
(2/18).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W8, PCGS# 8318, Greysheet# 9048)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
