Description
1869-S Half Eagle, MS61
Rare in Mint State
1869-S $5 MS61 NGC. The San Francisco Mint struck only
31,000 half eagles in 1869, and the majority circulated
extensively, with most surviving examples grading in the mid to
lower circulated level; only five Mint State pieces have been
certified by NGC and PCGS combined, with the finest being a sole
MS62 coin at PCGS (5/14). This piece displays faintly dusky,
bronze-gold luster overall, with minimal abrasions for the grade.
An area of localized weakness is seen on the horizontal shield
lines, as is typical of this issue, though the design elements are
otherwise well-defined. Census: 3 in 61, 0 finer (5/14).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W8, PCGS# 8318, Greysheet# 9048)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
