Rare AU53 1870 Half Eagle
1870 $5 AU53 PCGS. The 1870 has a mintage of only 4,000 pieces, and since the few gold collectors of the day selected proofs, PCGS has only certified one example above the AU55 level. The present AU53 piece exhibits considerable prooflike luster, and is pleasing for the grade despite a small cluster of thin marks on the field near the neck. Housed in a green label holder.
