Description

1870 Five Dollar, AU55
Low-Mintage Issue, Scarce in High Grades

1870 $5 AU55 PCGS. Both Philadelphia and San Francisco gold was largely ignored during the 1860s and 1870s, this issue being a good case in point. Only 4,000 pieces were struck. It appears that only two pieces have been certified in mint condition, making this Choice AU one of the finest known. The devices are well defined overall, the fields have an underlying sparkling brightness but it is partially subdued by the numerous small to medium-sized abrasions scattered over each side. Population: 6 in 55, 4 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W9, PCGS# 8319, Greysheet# 8916)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
