1870 Liberty Half Eagle, AU58+
Tied for the Finest at NGC

1870 $5 AU58+ NGC. The Philadelphia Mint coined 4,000 circulation strike half eagles in 1870, along with 35 proofs. Surviving examples are rarely encountered in any grade, and they are extremely rare above AU50. This impressive near-Mint example has lustrous orange-gold surfaces with minimal marks. A minor scratch is noted on Liberty's neck and jaw. The fields are reflective, bordering on prooflike. Census: 10 in 58 (1 in 58+), 0 finer (8/16).
