Description

1870 Liberty Five
Near-Mint Half Eagle Rarity
Just 4,000 Pieces Struck

1870 $5 AU58 PCGS. Only two Mint State examples are certified (both are MS61 PCGS coins), making this near-Mint example a true rarity and among the finest known. Garrett and Guth comment, "The 1870 half eagle is very underrated in all grades." The present coin is semiprooflike and only a few abrasions are distributed across both sides. Nice mint luster remains. The strike is bold, muted by just a touch of wear. Population: 4 in 58, 2 finer (7/14).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25W9, PCGS# 8319, Greysheet# 8916)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
