Description
Popular 1870-CC Half Eagle, AU50
1870-CC $5 AU50 PCGS. The 1870-CC, key to a set of "CC" half eagles, is popular and well known due to its status as the first issue of this denomination made at this mint. Only 100 or so examples are known in all grades, and most are heavily worn. About Uncirculated coins such as this AU50 offering are rare, and Mint State pieces are nearly unobtainable.Deep orange-gold patina imbued with traces of lilac and sky-blue resides on the obverse, while the reverse displays bright yellow-gold color. Luster is visible in the recessed areas of both sides, and the design elements are well defined, save for the usual softness on the eagle's neck. Distributed minute marks do not detract from the overall appeal. Population: 5 in 50, 10 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WA, PCGS# 8320, Greysheet# 9049)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
