Description
1870-CC Liberty Half Eagle, AU53
Low-Mintage, First-Year Issue
1870-CC $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1870-CC Liberty half
eagle represents the first year of coinage operations at the famous
Carson City Mint. From a small mintage of 7,675 pieces, most of the
coins circulated heavily in the regional economy at the time of
issue and few were saved for numismatic purposes. Accordingly, the
1870-CC is one of the most challenging issues of the series in
terms of both absolute and condition rarity. The present coin
exhibits just a touch of actual wear on the well-detailed design
elements and the strike is above average for the issue. This coin
is an early die state, with strongly impressed central devices. The
attractive orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and overall
visual appeal is strong. Population: 4 in 53, 6 finer (1/17).From The R. Thayer Sheets Yorktown Collection.(Registry values: P3)
