1870-CC Five Dollar Gold, VF25
Rare Carson City Gold
CAC Endorsed First-Year Issue

1870-CC $5 VF25 NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. A royal triumvirate, the 1870-CC half eagle, eagle, and double eagle each rank among the elite issues in their series. As a group, this first-year trio becomes increasingly challenging by denomination, culminating with the 1870-CC double eagle, with fewer than 65 pieces thought to exist in all grades. The eagle is nearly as scarce, with an estimated 75 pieces or less known in unimpaired grades.

As might be expected for a mintage of 7,675 pieces, the 1870-CC half eagle comprise an extremely small quantity. Researchers believe less than 120 pieces are extant in any grade, and perhaps 20% or more of those are thought to be impaired to the point that they cannot receive a numeric grade from either NGC or PCGS.

This pleasing example is a smoothly worn, green-gold coin, a bit softly struck at the centers as is normal for this first-year Carson City gold denomination. The striking pressure was incorrectly set for most of the half eagles struck in 1870, as evidenced by a lack of definition at the eagle's neck and head, as well as along Liberty's neck curls. A scattering of marks mitigated by 35 points of circulation are present, although with a lack of any significant defects. A solitary, tiny rim void below 7 in the date is a Mint-made flaw, hardly visible without magnification. The surfaces stand out as particularly high quality for the issue and the VF25 grade, confirmed by CAC endorsement. Eye appeal is strong for this low-survival, inaugural CC date. Census: 3 in 25, 28 finer (9/21).
