Description

1870-CC Half Eagle, VF25
First-Year Carson City Rarity

1870-CC $5 VF25 PCGS. Winter 1-A. Despite heavy mining operations at the nearby Comstock Lode, the Carson City Mint got off to a slow start in producing coins in 1870, with all three gold denominations struck there that year being rarities in their respective series. The 1870-CC half eagle is perhaps the most accessible gold piece of this date. A small mintage of 7,675 pieces were produced, and perhaps only 75 to 100 examples are extant in all grades.

This is a collectible Very Fine example, showing pleasing orange-gold patina with small hints of luster in the most protected areas. Myriad small abrasions accompany the grade on the obverse. With finer pieces being far out of reach for most collectors, this mid-grade 1870-CC half eagle will please many collectors. Population: 9 in 25, 50 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P3)
