Description
1870-CC Liberty Five, VF30
Rarest CC-Mint Half Eagle
1870-CC $5 VF30 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Only 7,675 Liberty half
eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1870, the first year
of coining operations at the famous Western facility. The entire
mintage was released into circulation and, since there was almost
no interest in collecting branch mint issues at the time, probably
no coins were saved for numismatic purposes. Today, the 1870-CC is
the rarest half eagle from the Carson City Mint, and most examples
seen are well-worn and extensively abraded. The present coin is an attractive VF30 example that shows considerable wear on most of the devices, but also retains much interior design detail. More than half the hair detail remains intact and the motto and ribbon are bold. The orange-gold surfaces are relatively lightly abraded, aside from a few marks on Liberty's cheek. Population: 7 in 30, 36 finer (12/15).(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WA, PCGS# 8320, Greysheet# 9049)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.27oz
Mintage: 7,675
