1870-S $5 AU53 NGC. Only 17,000 of these coins were struck in San Francisco during the year, and few survivors are seen today. In fact, the average grade of an example is VF38, far below the quality of this example. Modest portions of luster remain on the light yellow surfaces of this beauty. The fields are faintly reflective, imparting extra eye appeal to this pleasing piece. Census: 10 in 53, 14 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P3)
