Difficult 1870-S Half Eagle, AU53

1870-S $5 AU53 PCGS. CAC. The double eagle was the favored gold denomination at San Francisco in 1870, and five dollar coinage was limited to 17,000 pieces. Survivors in any grade are rare, and none have been certified by PCGS above AU55. The present lightly circulated butter-gold example has noticeable luster and no mentionable marks. Population: 2 in 53, 8 finer (5/10).(Registry values: P3)
