Description

Rare and Desirable 1870-S Half Eagle

1870-S $5 AU55 PCGS. Satiny orange-gold throughout with traces of luster in the protected areas. The strike is average for this date with most of the devices adequately defined, including the neck on the eagle which retains the desired definition on the eagle's feathers. For a coin of this period, the surfaces are better than average as the handling marks are scattered and the important devices lack deep or distracting nicks. Sporting a mintage of 17,000 pieces induces the novice to complacency, however, the experienced numismatist knows that any example of this date grading even close to the present coin is a great rarity. In this lofty grade, the present coin is a contender for the finest known with a select group of perhaps 15-20 others. Identifiable by a shallow dull scrape which is located between the second star and the junction of Liberty's neck and chest. Population: 6 in 55, 0 finer (3/06).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WB, PCGS# 8321, Greysheet# 9050)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
