Choice XF 1870-S Half Eagle

1870-S $5 XF45 NGC. Although gold coins circulated readily on the West Coast, the double eagle was the denomination of choice at the San Francisco Mint. Just 17,000 half eagles were produced, and no contemporary regard was given to saving examples for posterity. Typically struck, but the pale honey-gold surfaces are not unduly abraded. Census: 24 in 45, 24 finer (3/06).(Registry values: P3)
