Rare Choice XF 1870-S Five

1870-S $5 XF45 NGC. Luster shimmers from the plumage and legends of this rare date yellow-gold half eagle. Small marks are distributed, but we only note a brief hair-thin line above the eagle's right (facing) shoulder. A scant 17,000 pieces were struck, since double eagles were the most convenient denomination for gold reserves and foreign trade. Census: 24 in 45, 37 finer (7/10).(Registry values: P3)
