Description

1871 Five Dollar, AU55
Seldom Seen in Any Grade

1871 $5 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The 1871 Liberty half eagle had a scant mintage of only 3,200 pieces; the date is rare in all grades today, with a total surviving population estimated by many at about 100 examples. Small mintages were the pattern for this era, as gold was being hoarded and banks had not resumed specie payments. This impressive Choice AU example displays a bold strike and original orange-gold surfaces with hints of peach luster in the protected regions. Scattered light abrasions are not bothersome and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population: 8 in 55 (1 in 55+), 17 finer. CAC: 2 in 55, 6 finer (10/24).(Registry values: P3)
