1871-CC $5 AU50 PCGS. Winter 1-A. The Wide CC reverse is the most frequently encountered variety for this challenging yet collectible Carson City issue. Three die pairs are known for the date including a rare Close CC variety. Rich butter-gold toning graces the attractive About Uncirculated surfaces. While the coin is well-struck at the borders, the eagle's neck and Liberty's curls and eyebrow show a combination of light wear and a slightly soft strike. A 20,770-piece mintage places the 1871-CC about midway in terms of rarity among the 19 Carson City half eagle dates, with about 140 to 180 pieces surviving in all grades combined. This example is only lightly abraded save for a brief, thin mark near the M in AMERICA. PCGS Population: 7 in 50, 25 finer (1/25).
