Description

1871-CC Liberty Five Dollar, AU53
Challenging Early CC-Mint Issue

1871-CC $5 AU53 NGC. Winter 1-A. Although the 1871-CC is arguably the most available of the early Carson City half eagles, its low 20,770-piece mintage and conditional scarcity place it in high demand among series specialists. The issue is especially scarce above the XF grade level. Numerous and heavy abrasions preclude many examples from reaching the highly prized About Uncirculated grading tier. This brassy-gold example displays a sharp strike showing few signs of circulation wear on the sharply struck motifs. Magnification reveals only pinpoint field abrasions and there are no heavy or distracting marks. Soft mint luster remains visible throughout the obverse and the reverse. NGC Census: 7 in 53, 20 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P3)
