Description

1871-CC Liberty Half Eagle, AU53
Elusive Early CC-Mint Five

1871-CC $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. A nominal mintage of 20,770 Liberty half eagles was accomplished at the Carson City Mint in 1872, the second year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. The coins circulated heavily in the hard-money economy of the region, and probably none were saved by contemporary collectors, as there was little interest in mintmark varieties at the time and few numismatists were active in the Western United States until later in the 19th century. As a result, the 1871-CC is a rare issue in all grades today.

This attractive AU53 specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a trace of wear on the coronet and the hair above the eye. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster and the overall presentation is most attractive. Population: 4 in 53, 18 finer (1/17).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WD, PCGS# 8323, Greysheet# 9051)

Weight: 8.36 grams
