Description

1871-CC Half Eagle, AU53
'Bright Star' in the Series

1871-CC $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Ex: Rian's Bequest. The second C in the mintmark is centered over the upright of the E below. This was only the second year of operation for the fledgling Nevada branch mint. Whereas half eagle output began with 7,675 pieces in 1870, production increased substantially to 20,770 coins in 1871. Carson City expert Rusty Goe calls the 1871-CC five dollar "one of the bright stars" in the series in his terrific new reference, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector (2020). He estimated a total of 140 to 180 examples extant.

This is a lovely red-gold survivor. Both sides are predictably abraded for a lightly circulated Western gold coin. However, the reverse retains considerable prooflike reflectivity. Population: 3 in 53, 22 finer (11/21).
