Description

1871-CC Half Eagle, AU55
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr.

1871-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-A. CAC. Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Harry Bass had two 1871-CC half eagles in this grade: the present coin and the Eliasberg example. At the time, the coins were tied for second-finest at PCGS. This piece remains conditionally rare despite the discovery of addition AU coins in the last couple of decades. Partially lustrous fields show only light chatter, and the wheat-gold color is pleasing. Slight strike weakness is seen on the hair curls around Liberty's face and the center of the horizontal shield lines. Two linear marks below LIBERTY are seen under a loupe. Population: 11 in 55, 9 finer (10/17).
Ex: Purchased from World Wide Coin Investments (8/20/1972); Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 510.(Registry values: P3)
