Description

1871-CC Half Eagle, Choice XF
An Exceptional Coin for the Grade

1871-CC $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-A, as usual. Half eagle coinage at the Carson City Mint in 1871 totaled only 20,770 coins, almost all of which experienced heavy circulation as one of the first gold issues of this popular denomination that was introduced to the mining community around the Comstock Lode. Most survivors of the date grade VF or lower, and Uncirculated pieces are prohibitively rare.

This Choice XF example is high-end for the issue but remains more collectible than an AU coin. There is little actual wear, although the eagle's neck does show some minor strike weakness. The obverse stars and portrait are bold. Each side displays partially lustrous straw-gold fields with original patina, and contact marks are at a minimum. This 1871-CC five is far more appealing than the typical piece in this grade. Population: 15 in 45, 29 finer (2/17).
