Description

1871-S Five Dollar, AU53
Rarely Seen This Fine

1871-S $5 AU53 PCGS. Less than 1% of the 25,000 half eagles struck at San Francisco in 1871 are believed extant, indicative of the wide extent to which the 1871-S circulated in Western commerce. This piece survives in an unusually high grade for the issue. Each side is bright yellow-gold with scattered abrasions. Most stars are remarkably crisp, as are the eagle's feathers, talons, and olive leaves. Population: 6 in 53, 17 finer (12/16).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WE, PCGS# 8324, Greysheet# 9052)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
