1871-S Half Eagle, AU55
Challenging San Francisco Issue

1871-S $5 AU55 PCGS. The 1871-S half eagle proves quite elusive in AU grades, upholding its reputation as a low-mintage date with only 25,000 coins struck. This piece is partially lustrous and shows warm honey-gold color, with ample luster in the fields and little wear in the open areas. San Francisco gold of this era circulated on the West Coast, and few coins were retained for numismatic purposes until decades later. Population: 9 in 55, 11 finer (3/25).(Registry values: P3)
