Description

1872-CC Half Eagle, AU53
Rare in AU, Unknown in Mint State

1872-CC $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1-B. Ex: Rian's Bequest. The mintmark is further away from the tip of the fletching than on variety 1-A, which shares the same obverse. Of the 16,980 half eagles coined at the Carson City Mint during the facility's third year of operation, not a single example survives in Uncirculated condition. Even the most advanced specialists must compete for one of the 30 or so AU representatives known to the numismatic community.

This AU53 half eagle grades more than 22 points higher than average for the issue. It shows glowing frost around the stars, legends, and central devices, which are impressively bold. Scattered abrasions and red and lavender accents appear over orange-gold surfaces. Population: 9 in 53, 12 finer (11/21).
