Description

Choice AU 1872-CC Liberty Five
Unknown in Mint State

1872-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-B. The low mintmark identifies this coin as an example of Variety 1-B. The 1872-CC is a very rare issue even though 16,980 pieces were produced. Only 70-80 examples are believed known today. No Mint State specimens have been certified to date by either of the leading grading services.
This Choice AU example displays bright, yellow-gold surfaces with luster in the recessed areas. The design features are considerably better-defined than usual for the issue, which is typically poorly struck in the centers. While some softness appears in the hair curls around the ear, the remaining hair, eagle's feathers, and shield display nice detail. A few small contact marks are visible on Liberty's cheek and neck, but the surfaces show none of the extensive abrasions seen on most '72-CCs. The most distinctive pedigree identifiers are couple of milling marks on Liberty's neck, and a vertical die break from the eagle's beak to the left (facing) wing. Population: 5 in 55, 2 finer (9/11).
