1872-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Winter 1-B. A small mintage of 16,980 half eagles was accomplished at the Carson City Mint in 1872, and the entire mintage was released into circulation. Only a single Mint State coin survives today, graded MS60 NGC. Overall, fewer than 100 pieces survive, and high-end AU coins are rarely seen. This is only the second AU55 example we have handled since 2012. The surfaces are bright and yellow-gold in color with numerous small abrasions scattered over each side, as usual for this issue. A bit softly defined over the highpoints, as one would expect for a '72-CC, the most distinctive pedigree identifiers are a nearly vertical mark behind the trailing curls of Liberty's hair and a short nick to the right of star 1.
