Description

1872-S Five Dollar, AU58
Rare in All Grades

1872-S $5 AU58 NGC. This frontier-era half eagle was not preserved in quantity at the time of issue. Rather, virtually all of the 36,400 pieces struck were placed into circulation, where they were either worn to grades below the XF level or lost. A limited number of XF coins, nonetheless, did manage to survive, along with an even smaller quantity of AU pieces. Only three 1872-S half eagles have been certified Mint State by NGC; there are no Uncirculated coins at PCGS. This high grade survivor is bright with a mostly yellow-gold appearance. The eagle's head and neck are bluntly struck, as are some of the obverse hair curls, but the balance of the features are appreciably bold despite a little light wear. Scattered abrasions are consistent with the grade. Census: 5 in 58, 3 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WH, PCGS# 8327, Greysheet# 9054)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
