Description

1873 Open 3 Half Eagle, MS65
None Finer at PCGS

1873 $5 Open 3 MS65 PCGS. Lovely yellow-gold surfaces contain the slightest hints of rose. Satin luster is generous, and billows across the surfaces. A few minor errant marks can be found in front of the portrait, as well as an old abrasion on the cheek, which are the only abrasions of note. As with many denominations of gold coins, Philadelphia's production in 1873 was significantly higher than in the surrounding years, which numbered in the four figures in 1872 and 1874. The Open 3 is slightly more common than the Close 3, although only about a dozen survive in Choice or Gem Mint State, according to Garrett and Guth. PCGS has awarded the grade of MS65 four times, with none finer, and NGC has done so only twice (7/25), making this one of the top remaining examples of this issue.(Registry values: P3)
