Description

1873-CC Five Dollar, AU50
Elusive, Low-Mintage Issue

1873-CC $5 AU50 NGC. CAC. By the time of the 1873-CC half eagle mintage, the denomination reached a new low at the Nevada facility--even less than that of the initial-year 1870-CC mintage--producing 7,416 coins compared to 7,675 of the 1870-CC. This would remain the second-lowest mintage of the entire series among CC-mint issues, behind the 1876-CC. Today the 1873-CC is a bit more more elusive than the 1870-CC, and many survivors are well-circulated. This AU coin is at the upper end of certified survivors, even though a small handful of higher-grade pieces exist. (Garrett and Guth note that the certified populations are skewed by the former holdings of Harry Bass, who owned six high-grade examples that were all "sold into strong hands.") There are few mentionable marks, save for a single small linear scrape above the 73 in the date, near the lower bust. The yellow-gold surfaces are well-struck, although not fully so, and plenty of eye appeal is present. Census: 7 in 50, 2 finer (8/10).(Registry values: P3)
