1873-CC Half Eagle, Unc Sharpness
Elusive Carson City Key

1873-CC $5 -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. Unc Details. Winter 2-B. With a low 7,416-piece mintage and a survival rate hovering around 1%, the 1873-CC half eagle is a notable gold rarity and one of the top two five dollar gold issues in the Carson City series. Only two Mint State pieces are certified, although the present example displays Unc Details. To be sure, the coin is overly bright with light- to medium-gold color. There are no dense hairlines or other overt signs of cleaning other than the coin's questionable patina. The obverse is especially bright with partially reflective fields that host scattered light abrasions and tiny marks. The reverse is frosty and lustrous in comparison, with a few minor marks and no significant abrasions. Two die pairs accomplished the small 1873-CC mintage and an estimated 75 to 95 pieces survive in all grades combined (plus 14 Details submissions) according to Rusty Goe's analysis in The Confident Carson City Coin Collector (2020). This sharply struck and minimally marked example must be considered among top few dozen pieces known despite the light cleaning.
