Description

1873-CC Half Eagle, XF45
Elusive in All Grades

1873-CC $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2-A, the rarer of the two mintmark placement varieties for this date. The 1873-CC half eagle is a scarce issue in all grades and is genuinely rare above the VF level. Mint State examples and even AU coins are prohibitively rare. This issue comes from a mintage of only 7,416 pieces, and PCGS estimates that fewer than 100 survive in all grades. The infrequent appearances of examples in any condition at auction substantiates this estimate.

The present Choice XF coin displays original orange-gold patina with deeper lavender-olive tones over the worn high points of the devices. Light surface chatter accompanies the grade, although the eye appeal is excellent. A well-detailed piece with luster remaining in the protected portions of the fields. Population: 12 in 45, 9 finer (7/16).
