Description

1874-CC Half Eagle, AU53
Lovely Original Patina

1874-CC $5 AU53 NGC. Winter 1-B. White-gold surfaces are highlighted with some orange-gold and red-gold. Abrasions are faint, with only a few short nicks below the chin and around Star 12 being notable.

Six confirmed die marriages produced this relatively large mintage, combining two obverse dies, differentiated by date position, with five reverse dies. The die used for the current offering, Reverse B, is the only die where the two letters of the mintmark are not even, with the second C higher than the first.

The first decade of the Carson City Mint's operation saw consistently low production figures for half eagles, with 1874-CC being the highest at 21,198 coins. Also similar to the other Carson City issues of the decade, this date circulated heavily, with almost half of the certified population grading under XF, in marked contrast to most other dates, which have the bulk of their population in the AU range. The AU population accounts for just over one quarter of the total, making the present offering, with its originality, among the finer examples available.(Registry values: P3)
