Description

1874-CC Five Dollar, AU55
Elusive in All Grades
Rich Original Coloration

1874-CC $5 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-E. One of seven different documented die pairings for the 1874-CC half eagle, despite the small mintage of 21,198 coins. The mintmark is high and leans left, directly above the V in FIVE. As a date, the 1874-CC is scarce in all grades and in high demand. Mint State coins are prohibitively rare and none grade above MS62. This Choice About Uncirculated representative displays pleasing detail for the grade, with semireflective fields and rich straw-gold patina. Areas of deeper orange-gold and coppery color appear in the protected areas. Light chatter in the fields accompanies the grade. Anything finer is exceedingly rare. Census: 18 in 55, 12 finer (7/16).
