Description

1874-CC Half Eagle, AU55
Rare in High Grade

1874-CC $5 AU55 NGC. From a mintage of 21,198 pieces, the 1874-CC half eagle is one of the more available Carson City fives, but nearly all specimens seen are in lower circulated grades. At the AU55 level the issue is rare and Mint State examples are extremely rare. Louis Eliasberg only had an XF40 example of this date in his fabulous collection, and Harry Bass settled for an AU58 after 30 years of collecting.
The present coin is a pleasing example, with well detailed design elements that have been eroded by only seven points of even wear. The surfaces are a light greenish-gold color, and no distracting blemishes are noted. This coin possesses considerable charm and significant visual appeal. Census: 15 in 55, 19 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P3)
