Description

Intriguing 1874-CC Half Eagle, AU58

1874-CC $5 AU58 NGC. The mintage was somewhat more than 21,000 pieces, and although Goe calls it "easily the most accessible date from the first nine years of half eagle production at the Carson City Mint," he also estimates its survival rate at only 1%, or 210 pieces. This AU58 coin is clearly tied for the lower end of the Condition Census for the issue, as NGC and PCGS together have certified a maximum of three pieces finer (2/09).
This example displays a bold strike, with relatively mark-free surfaces for the grade and some moderate reflectivity noted in the fields. An intriguing and thoroughly attractive specimen. Census: 18 in 58, 1 finer (2/09).
