Description
1874-CC Five Dollar, AU58
CAC Endorsed, High-End Surfaces
1874-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Winter 1-A. No fewer than seven
die combinations from two obverse and four reverse dies were needed
to produce the 21,198-piece 1874-CC half eagle issue, an unusual
number considering the limited mintage. Perhaps the Carson City
Mint had an uncommon run of bad luck with reverse die failures.
Positional varieties aside, the 1874-CC half eagle as a whole is a
challenging issue in AU grades and an indisputable rarity in
near-Mint condition, as this coin is. While light but distinct wear
affects Liberty's brow and other high points, the apricot-laced
surfaces remain immensely lustrous and the central details are
bold. A tiny horizontal abrasion underlining the first C in the
mintmark hardly would be noticeable on an AU53 or AU55 coin but
stands out as one of the few marks on this extraordinarily well
preserved coin, the sort of AU58 that collectors dream of owning.
