Description

Borderline Uncirculated 1874-CC Five, One of Only 21,198 Pieces Produced

1874-CC $5 AU 58 PCGS. In grades above XF 45, the 1874-CC ranks ninth in rarity out of the 19 CC-Mint issues in the Liberty half eagle series. The preceding eight dates on this list are all from the 1870s, making the '74-CC the most common Carson City issue of this decade. Needless to say, the present coin is considerably rarer than any similarly graded CC-mint example from the 1880s and 1890s.
Doug Winter and Lawrence Cutler (1994) assert that fewer than 10 1874-CC half eagles are extant in About Uncirculated, with a mere two coins in Mint State. A pair of Choice AU examples are included in the Winter/Cutler Condition Census and, while we do not know the pedigree of the present coin, there is little doubt that it also qualifies for this coveted status. This issue is the best produced of the 1870-1874 CC-mint deliveries, and, indeed, both sides of this near-Mint specimen are nicely defined from the centers to the rims. The luster and color are wholly original, the latter being a pleasing blend of frosty and semi-prooflike finishes. The number of abrasions is limited for a circulated gold coin, but a small, shallow scrape in the reverse field between the tip of the olive branch and the D in the denomination is mentioned as a pedigree marker.
