Description

Conditionally Rare 1874-S Half Eagle, Choice AU

1874-S $5 AU55 PCGS. With a mintage of just 16,000 pieces, the 1874-S is scarce in any grade, and most of the examples that have appeared at auction are graded Very Fine or Extremely Fine. Garrett and Guth (2006) state: "The 1874-S is a true condition rarity. There are currently no known examples in Mint State." As the population data shows, this issue is exceedingly rare even in About Uncirculated. Charming orange-gold patina drapes the surfaces of this minimally marked example. The stars on the right are particularly soft, and the mintmark is lightly struck, as usual, but the rest of the details are well-defined. Plenty of luster in the fields enhances the eye appeal. Population: 4 in 55, 2 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P3)
