Description

1875-CC Half Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage Issue, Few Were Saved

1875-CC $5 AU50 PCGS. Winter 1-B. Rusty Goe notes that as double eagle Carson City production increased, the other gold denominations were struck in lesser quantity. The 1875-CC half eagle reports a production of 11,828 pieces -- a generous mintage compared to the minuscule production for most 1875 gold denominations at the other mints. Only double eagles were produced in quantity, primarily at the western mints for use on the West Coast and in international commerce. The 1875-CC half eagles quickly went into local commerce; not surprisingly, PCGS has certified only one example in Mint State to this day. The present About Uncirculated half eagle is a minimally abraded honey-gold example, sharply struck, with moderate circulation wear visible on Liberty's curls and strong eye appeal. PCGS Population: 7 in 50, 14 finer (12/24).
