Description

1875-CC Half Eagle, AU53
Unusually Well Struck and Attractive

1875-CC $5 AU53 NGC. Winter 1-B. Original orange-gold surfaces contain hints of rose, particularly in the upper right quadrant of the obverse. Obverse detail is somewhat soft, with the hair under the headband and curl on the neck somewhat mushy. However, the reverse is strong, with the only loss of detail in the eagle's feathers being due to wear. This is unusual, as this issue typically comes poorly struck. Abrasions are minimal, with a thin scratch between Stars 1 and 2 being the only one of note.

After a mintage peak in 1874, the 1875-CC's production almost halves to 11,828 coins, continuing the streak of low mintage Carson City half eagles in the 1870s. It also continues the trend of extensive circulation with few coins in higher grades, with 23.6% of certifications being in AU grades and just a sole Mint State example having been recognized between PCGS and NGC. Once again, this example's above average grade, paired with its rarity in high grade, make it an important opportunity for the specialist.(Registry values: P3)
