Description
1875-CC Five Dollar Liberty, AU53
Pleasing CAC Example
1875-CC $5 AU53 PCGS. CAC. Winter 1-B. Ex: The Fairmont
Collection. In 1874, the amount of gold being struck into federal
coinage at the Carson City Mint drastically increased over earlier
years of the branch mint's operations, and the high flow continued
into 1875. However, the majority of the gold coins produced were
double eagles. In 1875, lesser denomination gold pieces were only
struck to the extent needed for Nevada territory commerce. Just
11,828 half eagles were produced. This is a rare AU example of the issue and the first AU53 piece we have seen since 2010. It is one of two in this grade with CAC endorsement, and among the top six 1875-CC fives with the CAC green "bean." Old-time antique-gold patina retains elements of luster, with light wear and minor abrasions accompanying. Eye appeal is excellent. Population: 7 in 53, 7 finer. CAC: 2 in 53, 4 finer (11/24).
