Description
Well Struck 1875-CC Half Eagle
1875-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. As its 11,828-piece mintage might
indicate, the 1875-CC half eagle is a rare issue in higher grades.
Douglas Winter (2002) says: "This was clearly an issue that saw
considerable circulation and most survivors grade Extremely Fine 40
or below. The 1875-CC becomes very scarce in Extremely Fine 45 and
is rare in the lower About Uncirculated grades. This is a very rare
coin in higher About Uncirculated grades ... " We would add that
Mint State pieces are virtually unknown.
This Choice AU55 coin displays a fair amount of luster on
peach-gold surfaces, and benefited from an exceptional strike,
unusual for an issue that Winter calls: " ... one of the worst
struck Carson City half eagles." A few minor obverse circulation
marks are noted.(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WU, PCGS# 8337, Greysheet# 9060)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
