1875-CC Five Dollar, AU55
Virtually Impossible to Upgrade
Fresh to Market Example

1875-CC $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-B. If one did not fully grasp the extent to which these coins circulated out West during the latter part of the 19th century, a cursory glance at the current population data would paint a good picture. From a mintage of 11,828 coins, PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 189 submissions. Taking into account the unknown number of duplications, CoinFacts estimates that 150 distinct pieces survive. In 2003, Rusty Goe proposed 140 to 160 coins extant, so not much has changed in the past 15 years. Moreover, the average certified grade for the 1875-CC half eagle is just shy of VF35.

This Choice AU representative is well above-average with minimal high-point rub and a razor-sharp strike on the stars, feathers, and olive leaves. Pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and partly lustrous. Perhaps the most important aspect of this fresh offering is that it has never before been offered publicly. The coin was between family members from one generation to the next, and is being presented here for the first time. An old envelope detailing the provenance is included with this lot. Population: 6 in 55, 1 finer (6/17).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WU, PCGS# 8337, Greysheet# 9060)

Weight: 8.36 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
