Description

1875-CC Half Eagle, AU58
One Graded Finer at NGC

1875-CC $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2-C. The two C's in the mintmark are about level. Despite the moderate mintage exceeding 11,000 pieces, most certified examples of the 1875-CC half eagle today grade around VF35 or XF40 -- coins that circulated extensively in the peak Comstock Lode era in and around Carson City, Nevada. This near-Mint State example is a surprising departure from the norm, showing bright orange-gold luster and surfaces that are virtually free of perceptible wear. A few scattered ticks account for the grade, but much eye appeal remains. NGC has seen only a single Mint State example, an MS63, and this piece is tied with three other submissions in AU58 (11/13). This piece should be hotly pursued by Western gold specialists.
