Description

1876 Half Eagle, Minimally Marked AU53
A Popular, Low-Mintage Date

1876 $5 AU53 NGC. The 1876 five dollar gold piece is one of the most popular dates in the Liberty Head half eagle series due to its low mintage of 1,432 business strikes. The population data show only 45 certified pieces, with an unusually high concentration (26 pieces) in the Choice AU and better Mint State levels. Perhaps these were saved as souvenirs from the 1876 Centennial celebration. This AU53 specimen displays yellow-gold patina imbued with hints if apricot, rose, and red. Sharp design detail is apparent on the star centers, the dentilation, and the eagle's wing feathers, while Liberty's hair, the leg feathers, and arrow feathers reveal touches of weakness. Distributed minuscule marks are insignificant. Census: 4 in 53, 15 finer (3/14).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25WW, PCGS# 8339, Greysheet# 8923)
